About Sydney DeVille Studio

I started this studio because I wanted to do something for myself — and for the world. To bring a little beauty back. To slow down and really look at the nature that surrounds us, especially here in Louisiana, a place I have loved my whole life.

I grew up Cajun, in Ville Platte, knowing nothing else but pride in this land and the people on it. Louisiana is my heart. It is full of life and culture that is hard to come by these days — the fishing, the hunting, the agriculture, the deep knowing of the earth that generations before us carried without thinking. I watched that start to disappear. I learned about it dying in 4-H as a kid. It still hurts. And if I can capture even a fraction of this state's extraordinary beauty and contribute something to the long line of artists who have loved Louisiana before me, that is everything.

I don't plan to stop here. I want to illustrate everywhere I travel, every creature I encounter. But first, I am working on a field guide based entirely on what I see on our property in Louisiana, where my boyfriend and I are slowly, joyfully learning to live closer to the land.

We are not full-blown homesteaders yet. We are in our infancy. But it looks like slow mornings working from home, then afternoons outside building, fishing, hunting, and gardening. After a lot of hard work, rye grass, and clover, the animals have come back. We have baby animals. We have a forest coming back to life. I get to lean on skills from my childhood and build the life I only ever dreamed of, alongside my boyfriend.

My grandmother, Granny Apple, had everything to do with who I am as an artist. Every day after school we would garden together, watch Murder She Wrote, and paint. She loved oil pastels. She painted the most beautiful magnolias. She shaped what I love, what I notice, what I reach for. The Ethel line is named for her, because some things deserve to carry a name that matters.

When you hold one of my cards or carry one of my bags, I hope you feel connected to something real. To the quiet beauty of nature. To the idea that the things we surround ourselves with can be made with intention, built to last, and never truly go out of style.

I am building this slowly and honestly. I want to create sustainable goods one day. For now I am starting with my art, learning as I go, and trusting that the rest will follow.

Thank you for being here.

With love from Louisiana,
Sydney DeVille
